What is the composition of a flock?
scrotum of a ram
The maximum flock size is around 300 sheep. Most flocks
consist of
→ dams
with their offspring (male and female
lambs) as well as very little (often only one) grown-up
ram(s). This
→ ram is responsible for mating with all the
grown-up ewes in the flock. His number of daily (!) mating partners can be as big
as about fourty, a challenge for which nature has equipped rams adequately (see
figure). However, each act of mating takes only seconds.
